Time to Take Stock

Since I live to eat instead of eating to live, I have moments when I am tempted to rush to the diet aisle at my local pharmacy and stock up on powders, pills and potions that promise instant weight loss. But would I really look like the Adonis featured on the packaging after only two days? And what are the side effects since I can surely give up food, but doffing the wine isn’t likely to happen? I have no interest in having three-headed children down the road nor ending up in the ER for popping protein powder chased with Popov.

Dinner in Cooperstown

Read up on what the cultural and restaurant scenes were like in the past for a terrific snapshot of a location back in the day. Plus, you can see how a particular location has evolved and changed over time.

Ga-ga for Greenwich

Just a hop, skip and, hopefully, a non-traffic-clogged jump up I-95, Greenwich, Connecticut, offers a delightful small-town feel with all of the glamour of a major city. There’s terrific shopping (the main drag, Greenwich Avenue, houses everything from Tory Burch and Anne Fontaine to Design Within Reach and Baccarat), gorgeous homes (zip out Round Hill Road for some real stunners, and grab a coffee at the general store-like Round Hill Store) and terrific people watching (you’ve never seen so many blond Tory-clad women in Jack Rogers sandals, ever!). Plus, I love the police who man the picket fence-barricaded corners and won’t let you cross the street until they give you the command verbally. It’s all so quaint and Peyton Place-like.

Loving Little Compton

This past weekend, we discovered a magical escape for a romantic weekend! The just-opened Stone House in Little Compton is an impressive, historic hostelry hugging the coastline in this charming Rhode Island town. Little Compton is a revelation, a glorious mix of shingle-style cottages and agricultural fields that spill down to the seashore. We are reminded of the Hamptons 20 years ago, back when that resort community’s vibe was relaxed—before the see-and-be-seen restaurants and nightspots dominated.

Beachy Keen

I was feeling a bit downtrodden, a tad maudlin and trampled, so I zipped down to South Florida for a night of R and R by the shore. My destination was the fabled Boca Raton Resort & Club, the pink palace crafted by architect Addison Mizner back in the 1920s—all crenellated gables and sandcastle-like turrets overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway.
