The only thing more unlikely than a science-focused, comedic talk show on American TV is that its host—an astrophysicist—has more than 3 million Twitter followers. But both are real. StarTalk, led by Neil deGrasse Tyson, will be the first of its kind when it premieres this month on the National Geographic Channel. “I find the science that pop culture events are missing and then I try to enter the conversation,” he says. StarTalk evolved from Tyson’s hit radio program of the same name that gets 2 million podcast downloads a month. The weekly show will tape inside New York City’s Hayden Planetarium, where Tyson is director. When not exploring space, Tyson enjoys visiting an equally funky universe—Sixth Street in Austin.

Esther’s Follies
“When I used to live in Austin, I always brought visitors here,” Tyson says of the comedy club. “I’ve always appreciated sketch comedy.”

The Old Pecan Street Café
“To this day, I can still remember eating their carrot cake.” The restaurant is named after Sixth Street’s original moniker—Pecan Street.

The Austin Wine Merchant
“I love merchants who care about the wine they sell,” says Tyson. Hosting free weekly wine tastings is just one of the thoughtful touches of this locally run shop.

The Driskill
“It’s a grande dame of a hotel, and all of the famous country singers have stayed there. It brings historical reference to that part of Austin.”
