Charleston Basics

Charleston

Founded in 1670, Charleston has a southern sophistication that dates back to its early years when it became a center for art and entertainment. Boasting the first theatre in America as well as the first museum and opera performance, the town’s art-enriched culture has continued to prevail through the centuries. Today, this historical destination along the coast of South Carolina where the Civil War began is largely dominated by two fast-growing industries—aeronautics and the creative sector. Home to a Boeing factory and educational institutions like the College of Charleston, the city touts the greatest increase nationally in the percentage of residents who hold bachelor's degrees, according to the Brookings Institution.

Along with its temperate year-round climate and welcoming hospitality, Charleston’s progressive epicurean landscape is a big draw for residents and the more than four million annual visitors who make their way to Charleston annually. With many of the top-notch eateries in the heart of downtown, foodies gather in historical-homes-turned-restaurants to indulge in the latest take on traditional and contempoaray fare.

Stroll the narrow streets dotted with parks and landmarks to see examples of Georgian, Federal, and Greek Revival architecture dating back to the 18th and 19th century as well as homes ranging from quaint carriage houses to modern urban structures. To really get a taste of the old money, head to the Battery where a walk along the scenic waterfront will also take you past some of Charleston’s most grandiose mansions.
