On December 7, 1862, the Confederate Army of the Trans-Mississippi clashed with the Union Army of the Frontier in a day of fierce fighting resulting in as many as 2,700 casualties. As one of America’s Civil War battlefields, Prairie Grove is now a place where you can stand on a piece of history. Guided tours include a walking tour with an expert who will explain the details of the battle and significant spots, a tour of the historic Morrow and Latta houses or a 15-point virtual geocache tour. Or you also can try a self-guided approach as you drive through the grounds. The largest battle reenactment takes place in the park every other year in December with military drills conducted by re-enactors. During that recreation, you can also enjoy cooking, spinning and lace-making demonstrations, and living history programs.
