The Time Travel Mart is the place to go if you happen to need dinosaur eggs or time-machine parts.

It’s also the delightfully odd storefront for 826LA, the largest chapter of author Dave Eggers’ national network of writing centers for kids. Last year, more than 10,000 students ages 6 to 18 visited 826LA’s Mar Vista and Echo Park locations.

“At our core, it’s really about inspiring students to write and to become published authors,” says Joel Arquillos, a former public school teacher and current director of 826LA.

The nonprofit offers after-school tutoring, writing workshops, field trips and in-school programs and frequently taps volunteers to work with kids on different projects.

As for the Time Travel Mart? It’s a creative way for 826LA to raise money—and to spark its students’ imaginations. —Grace Urban
