Sunset Boulevard is one of the most famous streets in America, and singer Ryan Adams estimates he spends half his life there these days. In the Hollywood section of the 21-mile road that stretches from the Pacific Coast Highway to downtown LA, Adams has converted an old townhouse into his recording studio. There he poured hours into making his new, upbeat rock album, Ryan Adams. When he takes a break from creating music, Adams strolls down the street and embraces the neighborhood’s colorful vibe. “It’s not touristy since there are studios and local food joints everywhere, but it’s also not totally mellow,” he says. “You get some weirdos, street wizards, goths and punks.” Here’s where he checks in.

Amoeba Music: “I collect rare, vintage and out-of-print records, and this place has a never-ending supply of good ideas.”

Meltdown Comics: “I’m a lifelong comic book fan, and this place is nerd heaven. They also have art and comedy shows in the back.”

ArcLight Cinemas: “This is one of the few places where people can see films in a dome, and it’s so rad.” The theater has 14 screens, reserved stadium seating, a bar and a café.

Javista Organic Coffee Bar: “People come in from hipper neighborhoods for the best espresso and matcha Gibraltar [similar to a matcha tea latte but with less milk] you will ever have.”
