John Besh’s latest New Orleans restaurant, Pizza Domenica, was born from his earlier Italian restaurant, Domenica, where patrons book their tables a month in advance—for happy hour. That’s a promising sign for business and symbolic of the New Orleans way of life, where good food and drink is always on the brain. Besh, too, is tuned to the rhythm of the city. On his days off from cooking at one of his seven NOLA establishments, the James Beard-winning chef is apt to stroll down Esplanade Avenue with his wife, Jenifer, and four sons in search of the best local grub. Here are some of his favorite stops for a bite. P.S. Don’t miss Besh cohosting the new Spike network series Hungry Investors, which awards cash to failing restaurants.

Pagoda Café: “If I’m wandering around with my boys and Jenifer, we will start with an easy breakfast at Pagoda Café. My youngest son, Drew, loves their banana Nutella bread.”

Bayou Kayaks: “After breakfast, we might go rent some kayaks from Bayou Kayaks and then go launch them nearby on Bayou St. John.” Keep an eye out for the crocs as you paddle!

New Orleans Museum of Art: “After walking around the New Orleans Museum of Art for a few hours, I like to enjoy lunch with my family at Ralph Brennan’s Cafe NOMA.”

Swirl and Lola’s: “If Jenifer and I are having a night on the town, we will stop by Swirl wine shop and grab a bottle to bring to Lola’s—which has the most authentic paella in Orleans!”
