Portland is known as the City of Roses. So it’s not surprising that there’s a drop-dead gorgeous rose garden located in the heart of the city. Founded in 1917, the oasis is composed of different gardens exhibiting 6,800 rose bushes and 557 varieties. There’s even a Shakespeare Garden featuring herbs, trees and flowers mentioned in Shakespeare’s plays. And the 5.5-acre Japanese Garden has been hailed as one of the most authentic outside Japan. Look for stone lanterns, pagodas and bridges galore.

"We want you to visit our State of Excitement often. Come again and again. But for heaven's sake, don't move here to live. Or if you do have to move in to live, don't tell any of your neighbors where you are going." —Governor Tom McCall, 1971 interview
