It might be the smallest state, but Rhode Island’s capitol building is anything but diminutive. Designed in the neoclassical style, the State House sports the fourth-largest self-supporting dome in the world. The Independent Man, an 11-foot gold-covered bronze statue, was placed atop the dome in 1899, symbolizing the independent spirit. Make sure to check out the dome from inside the capitols’ rotunda, visit Rhode Island’s replica of the Liberty Bell and stop to see Gilbert Stuart’s famous portrait of George Washington. Guided tours run every 50 minutes Monday through Friday.
