Here are three coffee roasters that have impressed me with both their commitment to sourcing beans ethically—by now, that should be standard practice—and their amazing cups of joe.”

These guys treat coffee like a sommelier treats wine. Coffee geeks should make the pilgrimage to the Slow Bar, a tasting room where you can compare elite brews and brewing methods. Enjoy your beverage with Wi-Fi at the Express Bar, or just take a cup to go. The Obama blend, a mix of Indonesian and East African beans, is fantastic and there are a few rare blends, too.

Stumptown
18 W. 29th St., New York City
A stylish, independent coffee shop is something that’s been notably absent in Manhattan. Stumptown (founded in Portland, Oregon) is the perfect place to people-watch while sipping on coffee that has been meticulously selected, artfully roasted and brewed to perfection. I got hooked on the pour technique, and I always overnosh on the best baked goods of any coffeehouse.

Alterra
170 S. First St., Milwaukee
Stop by Milwaukee-based Alterra’s Fifth Ward Foundry café for some of the Midwest’s strongest, most flavorful coffee, plus great sandwiches and salads. Its huge patio, in the heart of the city’s old industrial district, is the perfect place to relax on a sunny day. With 11 locations citywide, it has the buying power to source amazing proprietary beans. There is always a pot of something new.
