Irishman Thomas Rowe opened the exquisite Don CeSar Beach Resort, Florida’s legendary “Pink Palace,” in 1928 as a hot spot for socialites and movie stars of the time. It was abandoned nearly a decade later when the Depression hit and Rowe fell ill. It wasn’t until 1973 that “The Don's” magic and grandeur was restored. Interior renovations updated the building's tired aesthetic, and the dreary furniture and fixtures were replaced with a beautiful Spanish-themed décor. Light wood floors and bright fabrics fill the open space, creating an incredibly posh yet relaxed feel.
The areas for entertainment are endless once the sun goes down at The Don. If you are looking to have some fun with the kids, check out Uncle Andy’s Ice-Cream Parlor, a tasty spot to fill your sweet tooth. On the other hand, any one of the three lounges are a perfect nightcap for those who want to sip on a tasty cocktail and dance the night away.
The Pink Palace truly sets the tone for the Old-World feel of St. Petersburg. Perfectly situated on Pass-a-Grille Island, the resort looks out onto Boca Ciego Bay and is just a few steps from the shore. This allows for as much (or as little) water activity as you wish. There are boats to rent, fish to catch and, of course, shells to find. But if you are simply looking to relax, a beach chair and shady umbrella can be set up in an instant.
Lay Your Head in Style
Clearly, the stunning exterior of The Don is hard to beat. But the interior of each room is simply a dream. There is a European elegance with gorgeous chandeliers, marble accents and French candelabras, but tropical touches work to brighten the space with color and style. Amenities include plush bedding, flat-screen TVs, high-speed Internet, breathtaking balconies and luxurious bathrooms.
Take a Dip
The heated plunge pool is the perfect place to lounge on a sunny afternoon. Dive in, and you’ll notice your favorite song is still playing. That’s right, this high-tech watering hole has an underwater sound system. Don't miss taking a dip in the nearby Jacuzzi afterward. If the kids are looking for some action, sign them up for Camp CeSar, which provides them with an array of programs and activities for a whole day of sun-soaked fun.
Learn How to Relax
Just last March, the Don added an $11 million three-story spa and salon to its repertoire. The Spa Oceana has 16 treatments rooms with lovely views and a rooftop terrace. Whether you are looking for a massage, manicure, body wrap or even hydrotherapy (the use of water to sooth aces and pains), you will find it at this mecca for relaxation.
Please Your Palate
There are three main restaurants on the ritzy resort, each featuring a different setting and cuisine. The Sea Porch Cafe's wicker chairs and garden-like ambiance is matched with simple food made with fresh ingredients. For some more action, The Beachcomber Bar & Grill has great cocktails, delicious bar food and a casual setting. And, of course, The Maritana Grille has been buzzed about for more than a decade now, with award-winning cuisine and an excellent atmosphere.
