Westchester Basics

Westchester
Sometimes referred to as “The Golden Apple,” Westchester County sits just north of New York City and is inhabited by generally well-connected citizens (note the Rockefeller estate at Kykuit). This affluent county spans over a very large portion of New York state and has been a steady and secure suburban oasis for commuters working in Manhattan since the late 1950s thanks to the easy train routes and myriad parkways.

Known for its picturesque, often rural views, Westchester is home to countless vistas that have inspired artists for centuries. Small communities tie together this large county, and there are numerous centers of art, nature and commerce that entice visitors and locals to explore the rich surroundings. Local educational institutions, including IONA College, Sarah Lawrence and SUNY Purchase, offer outstanding programs for the arts and sciences that benefit both students and the community at large. Fervent efforts to save wildlife and keep the parks clean are in constant motion as are initiatives to preserve historical landmarks and structures.

The county’s charming towns are home to numerous gourmet restaurants, high-fashion shops, invitation-only independent movie premieres and bed and breakfasts housed in manors once owned by 19th-century millionaires. However, underneath the prosperity that often defines this area, there is a core of hardworking people that believe in and care deeply about the work they do, the art they support and the environment in which they live.
